The Dalai Lama, Rupert Murdoch and the forces of evil

Article Abstract:

The Dalai Lama is becoming an increasingly significant international figure, and attracted very large crowds when he led meditation and teaching sessions in New York, NY, recently. However, his growing popularity is accompanied by an increasing number of attacks on him in the media. The Dalai Lama has been very successful in promoting the cause of the Tibetan people without losing his moral authority. His growing success means that he becomes a threat to the image of China that the Chinese authorities wish to present. For this reason, China is seeking to undermine his image.

Not the climate for a dinosaur

Article Abstract:

The Prison Officers' Association (POA) was regarded as inward-looking but has changed to meet with other bodies and cooperated with the Fresh Start initiative. Each of 128 prisons has its own branch, so centralisation is impossible. The privatisation of Strangeways prison was a surprise to the union. It has to decide whether or not to encourage the Prison Department to tender for the contract. Poor prison management affected POA's development. Accountable management contracts may affect the POA's power.
