The FO encircled and about to fall

Article Abstract:

The Euro-sceptics within the Conservative party are starting to put pressure on prime minister John Major to replace foreign secretary Douglas Hurd at the Foreign Office with someone who is much more cautious about the UK's links with the European Union. This would cause great changes at the Foreign Office, which has not been controlled by the Conservative party's nationalistic right-wing elements for many years. A few signs are starting to emerge that Douglas Hurd may leave the position, but he is determined to ensure that his opponents are taken by surprise.

Major's bid to lance the boil

Article Abstract:

John Major's decision to resign as leader of the Conservative Party was completely unexpected, and was therefore a very accomplished piece of political manoeuvring. There is always the risk that he will be defeated in the leadership contest, but he is much more likely to be successful, as he has not allowed his opponents to gain the upper hand. Most Conservatives will be very relieved that he has taken action to end the constant speculation about a leadership battle.

Tired Tory eyes alight on Shere Khan

Article Abstract:

Some observers are now starting to predict that John Major could face a challenge soon to his position as leader of the Conservative party. Many members of the government seem resigned to the fact that there will be a leadership battle, as they realise that the current situation, in which there seems to be no firm political will, cannot be allowed to continue. Possible challengers include Michael Portillo, Kenneth Clarke and Michael Heseltine.
