The Top 200 drugs

Article Abstract:

Two factors contribute to a drug's inclusion to Top 200 prescription drugs list, namely, aggressive detailing and direct-to-consumer advertising. These were gleaned from the results of the 1998 survey headed by Jim Charnetski of Audit Services. The increase in product launches, on the other hand, is attributed to more aggressive sales promotion by manufacturers and a more efficient FDA new drug approval process. The 1999 rankings was led by Wyeth-Ayerst's Premarin, followed by Synthroid and Trimox, respectively.

Lack of counseling caught on camera

Article Abstract:

The CBS 'News 2 At 5' program aired film footage by a hidden camera inside a CVS H.C. Inc drugstore that showed pharmacists are not offering to counsel patients about their medications as required by New York state law. The footage was part of the Feb 26, 1999, program segment entitled 'Rx for Disaster' hosted by Marsha Kramer. Such programs could damage pharmacists' professional image. Further, they could also raise consumers' expectations about the level of service to require from pharmacists.

Will FTC approve Rite Aid/PCS?

Article Abstract:

The National Community Pharmacists Assn (NCPA) has requested the Federal Trade Commission to conduct an antitrust review of Rite-Aid's acquisition of PCS Health Systems Inc. PCS is the country's biggest pharmacy benefit manager. The NCPA has argued that Rite Aid could use PCS' 55,000 pharmacy records to benefit its operations despite Rite Aid's announcement that there will be a 'firewall' between PCS and its chain retail operations.
