The Tories risk killing the thing they love - the pound

Article Abstract:

UK Conservative party leader William Hague has come under strong pressure from the fundamentalist wing of the party to state with total clarity whether the UK would, under a Conservative government, ever abandon the pound and join European monetary union. At the 1999 Conservative party conference, Hague responded to this pressure by reinforcing an earlier speech in which he spoke of the possibility of renegotiating existing European Union treaties. This is a very misguided approach, and may actually bring about the downfall of the pound.

Blair must ditch his friend in Germany

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has been mistaken in over-estimating German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder. It is now becoming clear that Schroder is in a weak position, and his Social Democratic party could lose power if unemployment is not significantly reduced. Blair must now realize that the German Social Democrats will not be able to assist in forging a common Third Way, and he should distance himself from Schroder.
