The true horror of what is happening here is beyond belief

Article Abstract:

It seems increasingly likely that the United Nations Assistance Mission in East Timor will soon withdraw, leaving ordinary people there to cope alone with violent attacks by militiamen and Indonesian soldiers. Many people have fled to the United Nations compound in Dili, East Timor, and the Indonesian soldiers are directing more people there, clearly hoping to place an impossible burden on the United Nations.

The army shot him, in much the same way as it had already killed thousands of Timorese before

Article Abstract:

Indonesian army soldiers have murdered Sander Thoenes, the Financial Times correspondent in Jakarta, Indonesia, in Dili, East Timor. He had hired a motorbike rider to take him to Becora, an area to the east of Dili which is a stronghold of pro-independence supporters. He and the rider were attacked by six men wearing the uniforms of the Indonesian army. In an earlier incident, two other foreign journalists, an interpreter and a driver were attacked in similar circumstances, but the journalists managed to escape.
