The beautiful and damned

Article Abstract:

The UK has some buildings which were designed on a very grand scale, but these mostly date from the Victorian era or before. Nowadays, there seems to be a general fear of very large buildings, and this is part of the reason for the controversy over plans to extend the Victoria and Albert Museum. Over recent years, there has been unwillingness to accept anything new and exciting, and investment in large new buildings has also been hampered by a fall in investment in infrastructure as a whole.

Beautiful buildings, bargain prices

Article Abstract:

Architect Sir Norman Foster designed the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank headquarters which cost 500 million pounds sterling and the Cranfield Institute of Technology library, Bedfordshire, England which cost only 4 million pounds sterling. The Department of Education and Science largely paid for it, demonstrating that public buildings can be designed with excellence despite limited budgets. Sir Norman Foster and Partners work hard, even at a loss, to give clients the best results.

The art of conjuring new tricks out of old buildings

Article Abstract:

Artangel, set up by James Lingwood and Michael Morris, has for several years been looking at how architecture can be made the subject of art and how artists can transform existing buildings or create new ones. It holds one major art-into-architecture event each year, and its next production will be 'Selfstorage.' This will feature a creation designed by Brian Eno and Laurie Anderson and situated inside a self-storage depot.
