The campaign has paused, but the worries go on

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party is becoming increasingly concerned about the likely outcome of the forthcoming referendum on the establishment of an independent Scottish parliament. The death of Diana, Princess of Wales, has caused campaigning to be suspended temporarily, and this may have a negative impact on the turnout. There is also concern about the emergence of closer links between the Labour party and the Scottish National Party, even though Donald Dewar, Secretary of State for Scotland, has been careful to state that there are no signs of Scotland wanting complete independence.

Fear and Lothian on home rule trial

Article Abstract:

UK Labour party leader Tony Blair is determined to obtain as much support as possible for Scottish home rule, both within Scotland itself and in England. In taking this stance, he is making himself vulnerable to attacks from the Conservatives, who will emphasise that a Scottish Parliament would not be able to do anything that a reformed central government would not be able to do. Blair's commitment to home rule will leave Scottish MPs with some difficult decisions to make.
