The cleverest bird on two legs

Article Abstract:

Many people have been attracted to invest in ostrich farming in the UK over recent years, even though there is very little demand for ostrich meat and there is no ostrich abattoir. However, the collapse of the Ostrich Farming Corporation may put an end to this type of investment. The ostrich has generally had a negative image, but is in fact a very clever bird. It has survived many evolutionary changes, and commercial farming may prove to be the next stage in its development.

Withdrawal from fast-breeder project confirmed

Article Abstract:

Britain intends to abandon the European project involving the design of a fast-breeder nuclear reactor. Research funding will stop, although it could have been used to finance low-pollution coal-burning power stations or renewable energy projects. A small fast reactor at Dounreay, Caithness, Scotland was the world's first to generate electricity for a national grid in the 1950s. Collaboration with France and Germany was to construct a full-size reactor.

Pits fight for survival in face of gas threat

Article Abstract:

Plans to switch from coal to natural gas to generate electricity mean 20,000 job losses as British Coal reduces pits from 48 to 12. Privatised generators and distributors want to obtain the cheapest fuel. Combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power stations burn the fuel. Electricity generated from CCGT plants may not be cheaper than coal as gas prices have increased.
