The day Wallis and her husband met the prince and his mistress

Article Abstract:

There were signs from shortly after the first world war that King Edward VIII, who resigned in 1936, had become extremely interested in US culture. He visited the US as Prince of Wales, and was greatly influenced by all things American. He began to move out of the influence of his parents and developed his own circle of friends, people who were not necessarily approved of in conventional British society. He became an increasingly solitary figure as his brothers married, but had a succession of mistresses during the 1920s. He first met Wallis Simpson, his future wife, in 1931.

Good fellowship gilds the last summer of peace

Article Abstract:

The photographs taken by the future King Edward VIII during summer 1914, when he was a student at Oxford University, England, indicate that he enjoyed a wide range of social activities. He did not perform very well academically, preferring to spend time riding, drinking with friends and undertaking various activities with the Office Training Corps. This lifestyle was to come to an abrupt end with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir apparent to the Austro-Hungarian throne, in Jun 1914.

A loving slave who buckled Wallis's shoes and painted her toenails

Article Abstract:

Photographs from the private albums of the future King Edward VIII during the period 1934 to 1936 indicate that he was becoming increasingly close to Wallis Simpson. Indeed, he subsequently abdicated in order to marry her. It became clear at an early stage that their relationship fulfilled a deeper need in his personality that earlier relationships had. It was in many ways a mother-son relationship, with him often acting like her slave.
