The high priest of The Beat
Article Abstract:
Author William Burroughs gained extensive exposure to the seediest aspects of life during his time in Chicago, IL, where he worked as a pest exterminator for A.J. Cohen. He made contact with Lucien Carr and David Kammerer, and moved with them to New York, NY, where they lived in Greenwich Village. Burroughs came to regard this as his spiritual home, and became a regular customer at the San Remo Bar and the Minetta Tavern. The murder of Kammerer by Carr inspired Burroughs to begin writing again, collaborating with Jack Kerouac on a project entitled 'And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks.'

They moved to a ranch in Texas in Jan 1947, and Vollmer gave birth to their child on Jul 21, 1947. They subsequently moved to New Orleans, LA, but after being raided for possessing drugs they moved to Mexico City in late 1949. Burroughs killed Vollmer in a drunken accident on Sep 6, 1951.

'I have learned the junk equation. Junk is not a kick. It is a way of life.' (publication of William Burroughs' book 'Junkie')
Article Abstract:
William Burroughs' book 'Junkie' equates identity with addiction and conformity with control, with its prose mimicking the heroin lifestyle, rather than simply describing it. At the time of the publication of this book, Burroughs began a relationship with Allen Ginsberg. He moved to Morocco in Jan 1954, but missed Ginsberg greatly. His relationship with Ginsberg provided him with the impetus he required to begin writing again, and his work at this time was to form the basis for 'The Naked Lunch.'
