The importance of convicting this elderly man of murder

Article Abstract:

The fact that Anthony Sawoniuk, who is now an elderly man, has been found guilty of the murder of Jews in the former Soviet Union during the second world war, is to be welcomed. His case indicates that those who believe that they can never be called to account for crimes against humanity can prove to be misguided. This has particular significance at a time when ethnic Albanians are being expelled from Kosovo, Yugoslavia. It is likely that in the long term those who are guilty of war crimes in Kosovo will find that they will have to justify their actions.

How many more ghosts will trudge from the land of the lost?

Article Abstract:

Large numbers of ethnic Albanians continue to flee Kosovo, Yugoslavia. Refugee camps in Albania and Macedonia are seriously overcrowded, but there are still many more ethnic Albanians hiding in the forests in Kosovo. Some remain in their villages, aware that the Serbs will reach them eventually. The refugees are now becoming aware that they will not be able to return to their homes in the near future, and many are beginning to lose hope.

Two arrests, one message about human rights abusers

Article Abstract:

The arrests for human rights abuses of former Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic and former Rwandan mayor Sylvestre Gacumbitsi are discussed. It is argued that these arrests show that it is no longer possible to excuse crimes against humanity as simply being the result of the pressures of war.
