The lesson from Winooski

Article Abstract:

Murray Bookchin, 71, was a Marxist agitator but in 1992 he is director emeritus of the Institute of Social Ecology, Vermont and has published several books on anarchism and on the environment. He is a Green philosopher who believes in the need for people to be responsible for their immediate environment by attending town meetings and living in closer relationships with nature. Current hierarchical society encourages the idea of dominating nature, but a change in society to smaller communities could affect the treatment of the earth.

No more butcher, no more baker

Article Abstract:

The fact that superstores now offer a wide range of services and attract large numbers of shoppers is pushing smaller specialist retailers out of business. Many people still claim that small shops are important, but are still more likely to shop at superstores. Superstores offer easy parking, low prices, attractive displays and a pleasant atmosphere, and make shopping quicker and easier.
