The life that late he led

Article Abstract:

An interview with composer Leonard Bernstein recorded in 1989 gives a clear insight into how grateful he was to people who expressed even a small amount of enthusiasm for his music. It is clear that he was greatly hurt by the fact that most of his contemporaries, even his friends, did not take any of his compositions seriously. He had a strong belief that all music evolves from other music, and he therefore needed to experience a wide range of musical forms. He always wished that the American musical would evolve into an American opera form.

The master hangs up his horn of plenty

Article Abstract:

Playing the horn becomes more difficult, rather than easier, as the player gains in ability, according to Barry Tuckwell, who became principal horn of the London Symphony Orchestra at the age of only 24. Shortly to retire as a solo player, he is now the most recorded horn player ever, and has inspired many works for the horn by leading modern composers. He believes that horn players can never afford to be complacent, as the difficulties of the instrument will quickly become apparent if technical issues are neglected.

Innocent as charged

Article Abstract:

It is vital that an orchestra which has the word 'national' in its title reflects the national character of the country in which it is based, according to Leonard Slatkin, the new music director of Washington's National Symphony Orchestra. He will instigate changes in the orchestra's programming, but will also go further than this, undertaking a complete revamp of the orchestra and its environment. Building character in the orchestra will require a long-term approach.
