The man who fell to earth

Article Abstract:

Freddie Laker created Laker Airways and the Skytrain but was forced into bankruptcy by the scheming of his competitors. Now working for Princess Vacations, Laker started in the aircraft business with his company Aviation Traders which was acquired in 1958 by British Airways. He then started Laker Airways in Apr 1966 and the innovative Skytrain service in 1971. It was six years before Skytrain could operate, but then it succeeded and he tried to expand into Europe. On Feb 5, 1982 his company collapsed and it is now believed that this was due to the conspiracy and illegal actions of his competitors.

Welcome to Britain. Queue here

Article Abstract:

In 1993 European frontiers will be opened but Britain will continue to check passports to control illegal immigrants, terrorists and the import of drugs, pornography, firearms and rabid animals. The European Court will prosecute and could impose severe penalties on Britain. Figures for 1990 show that 1/3 of the UK drugs haul was found through searches at ports and airports while two-thirds were through intelligence. Queues are unwelcoming to tourists. Plans for first-class express queues are considered undemocratic by the EC's Internal Market Department.

Heady stuff, all that nudist volleyball

Article Abstract:

Health and Efficiency, the nudist magazine, has been published for 93 years and is still going strong. In the 1950's and 1960's it was the only magazine to show photographs of the naked form and was much sought after by schoolboys as part of their sex education. Nowadays there is an abundance of magazines picturing naked women and men in graphic anatomical detail but Health and Efficiency is obviously still in demand. Photographs, although mild, are now unexpurgated, unlike 30 years ago when all private parts were air-brushed out prior to publication.
