Salmon lured back to cleaned-up Mersey after 100-year absence

Article Abstract:

Salmon have returned to the Mersey river, England, according to the Environment Agency. The river was once Europe's most polluted, and efforts have been made to clean it up from 1985. The 19th century industrial revolution led to the disappearance of salmon, and no fish life existed in the river 20 years prior to 1999. Sewage and industrial pollution have dropped and fish life can be supported by 70% of the river system, a figure set to increase to over 80% by 2001.

The man whose 1m pounds sterling gift keeps Blair's mind on hunting

Article Abstract:

International Fund for Animal Welfare founder Brian Davies seeks to avoid publicity, and is not closely linked with the debate in the UK about whether fox-hunting should be banned. However, if the government does decide to go ahead with a ban, he will have played a significant role in this decision. He donated 1 million pounds sterling to the Labour Party to ban fox-hunting, and this has ensured that the issue remains a priority for the government.
