The only way forward for rail is to return it to public ownership

Article Abstract:

The UK's private rail companies are finding that they cannot cope with the day-to-day management of rail services or with long-term investment. The rail system continues to rely on subsidy, and this means that it has not been truly privatized.

One signal could stop the train

Article Abstract:

The break-up of British Rail has now begun, even though the privatisation plans have attracted considerable opposition. However, it is likely that there will be further delays in the privatisation process. The government aims to have 51% of the railway in the private sector by Apr 01, 1996, but has yet to issue tenders for all but three of the around 100 companies into which British Rail has been divided.

Where do we go from here?

Article Abstract:

There is no doubt that Automatic Train Protection technology will be introduced as a result of the train crash near Paddington station, London, England. It is also certain that other safety measures relating to fire resistance and driver training will be implemented. It is clear that accidents can never be entirely prevented, but it is also important to remember that, even before this tragedy, there were serious problems with the rail system in the UK. This is not entirely attributable to privatization, but privatization exacerbated existing problems.
