The parade went straight up Fifth Avenue

Article Abstract:

St Patrick's Day is celebrated in the US, where 40 million people have Irish ancestry. In New York City the St Patick's Day parade was classed as a religious event by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, to exclude gays and lesbians. Many wish to parade to demonstrate nationalism rather than religion. President Clinton won support from influential Massachusetts politicians, who have Irish heritage, by promising a peace envoy to Northern Ireland in his campaigning. However, he has since declared that there will be no peace envoy.

The lesson of Algeria: Islam is indivisible

Article Abstract:

Islam is a religion of extremely strong beliefs which sees it as a duty to wage war on all those who do not accept its doctrines. It has been characterised by the jihad, or holy war, right from the time of the Prophet Mohammed himself, and the wars which exist in various parts of the world today are simply a revival of Islam, rather than a sign of any sort of fundamentalism. The most vicious war at present is in Algeria, although it has attracted little international attention.

Mr Rabin's cavalry is coming

Article Abstract:

About 5,000 Russians who are secular Jews emigrate to Israel every month since the Cold War ended. There are about 400,000 there in 1993. In Israel Orthodox religion is practised in dogmatic, intolerant sects with which new immigrants do not wish to be associated. Oriental Jews are in the majority and hold most of the leading roles in the country. Secular, European Israelis are pleased to be joined by the Russians as they feel they are a threatened class.
