The puritans would purge the hippies

Article Abstract:

The post-hippie liberalism of people who grew up in the 1960s is now dominating personal values in the UK. In contrast, the tone for the country's political life is being set by the new puritanism of those who take their ethics from the 1970s. This trend has been highlighted recently by the reaction to the statement by influential agony aunt Dr Miriam Stoppard that eight-year-olds should be given positive information about using cannabis. Her views have attracted strong criticism from Home Office minister George Howarth.

The soul searchers

Article Abstract:

The death of Diana, Princess of Wales, has led to an increase in the habit of leaving flowers to indicate a tragedy. Some commentators saw the death as triggering a new religious feeling in the United Kingdom, but it is unclear whether true spirituality is involved. Collective rituals in response to a death are common at a time of social fragmentation, and involve the giving up of personal identity in the expression of grief. Princess Diana had a symbolic role and was seen by many as an imaginary friend.

Defining the new Jerusalem

Article Abstract:

The sense of community which UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has been emphasizing for many years exists in many different forms. In some cases, it is still synonymous with place, especially as the majority of Britons still live close to where they were born. In other cases, there is a strong sense of community in the workplace or among a particular age group or social class. The concept of community has not died out, but needs careful nurturing if it is to survive.
