The queen of horror, acting out a lifetime's dread

Article Abstract:

Ingrid Pitt is an actress who spent part of her childhood in a German concentration camp after her father refused to work for the Nazis. She escaped from the camp after the Russians invaded, and hid in a forest. She became an actress in East Germany, and escaped to the US after she was sought by the police for criticising the authorities. She moved to England where she saw two possibilities open to her, pornographic or horror movies, and chose to work in horror movies which have since become classics. She has coped with her past by replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts.

A knight out at the Oscars

Article Abstract:

Actor Ian McKellen has always appeared to have much closer links with the stage than with film. However, it seems possible that he will win the 1999 Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in 'Gods and Monsters.' This highlights the fact that McKellen has often done the unexpected. He has always sought new experiences, and has shown particular energy and self-confidence since he made his homosexuality public in 1988. The decision to be open about his sexuality can be seen as marking a turning point in his career.

The blonde who came in from the cold

Article Abstract:

Kim Basinger plays a call girl in the new movie 'LA Confidential' which represents a return to the motion picture industry after a period spent being a mother and home-maker. She suffered from separation anxiety as a child and this affected her in adult life when she wished to be a star and a child at the same time. Her credibility was affected by some of the parts she played such as a moll in 'The Marrying Man.' The career break helped her, and her performance in the new movie reminds viewers of her better roles.
