The real price of mortgages

Article Abstract:

A report from the UK Institute of Actuaries' working party on endowment mortgages indicates that repayment mortgages should be the starting point for any home loan. Endowment mortgages can be better than repayment mortgages, but only if they are reasonably priced, they use plausible return assumptions and borrowers are clearly aware of the risks involved. An implicit message of the report is that mortgages on average remain too expensive in the UK, and must eventually come down.

'Instead of biting the bullet and accepting the loss, Nick Leeson doubled up his bets - and then doubled them again ...' (trader behind collapse of Barings)

Article Abstract:

The actions of trader Nick Leeson were behind the losses which brought about the collapse of Barings, with unprecedented sums being lost. He made losses for several years, but continued to report to his superiors that he was making money. He was using only straightforward trading methods, and was only really talented in being able to conceal his actions. His superiors failed to investigate his activities, believing that he had found a reliable way of making large profits.

Survival of the fittest in a struggling sector

Article Abstract:

The investment trust sector is currently undergoing a difficult period, with discounts having generally widened in 1996. This is partly due to the fact that the market, having made a strong recovery in summer 1996, is now suffering from the uncertainties of the pre-election period. The investment trust sector has expanded very rapidly since the mid-1980s, but is subject to the same cycles as any other industry.
