The resistable urge to rent your home

Article Abstract:

In Britain it is considered normal to own your own home and anyone renting meets considerable prejudice. Renting implies poor quality housing for low-earners. In America, Germany and other countries the way you live does not matter. Falling UK house prices deter some buyers in the 80's and 90's and rents can be lower than mortgage repayments in some areas. Private landlords represent under 10% of landlords and council house building has almost ceased, leaving housing associations to offer rented accommodation.

Slump weakens the urge to move

Article Abstract:

Although about 1200 government jobs have been relocated across the country and a further 20,000 civil servants will move in 1992/4, cost savings are lower in 1992 and there is less need to relocate. Rents have halved and problems with selling put firms off moving. Nationwide Building Society is leaving its 18-month-old London head office and moving 90 staff to its administration centre in Swindon for operational efficiency. Many relocations from central London only go as far as the suburbs.

When a fixture is no longer a fitting

Article Abstract:

Houses that have been repossessed or sold often have fittings removed by departing occupants. By law, anything which has been fixed by bolts or screws forms part of the sale contract and should not be removed. The Law Society has introduced a new conveyancing form where the vendor indicates which fixtures are part of the house sale. The 1991 Property Misdescriptions Act forbids estate agents from embellishing the qualities of a house and sellers must sign a house-contents inventory.
