The rush for Chinese bed partners continues apace

Article Abstract:

The purchase of a 20% stake in China Light and Power, the largest electricity utility in Hong Kong, for 1.3 billion pounds sterling by Citic Pacific, part of China International Trust and Investment Corp, is part of moves by the latter to establish a strong presence in Hong Kong. There is now very strong Chinese investment in Hong Kong, and there are believed to be at least 4,000 Chinese-owned companies in Hong Kong. It is clear that it will become increasingly important to have good political and business connections when Hong Kong reverts to Chinese sovereignty.

A company worth being seen with

Article Abstract:

Citic Pacific, a subsidiary of Chinese state-owned China International Trust and Investment Corp, attracted considerable attention when it was formed by Rong Yiren, now a vice-president of China, in the early 1990s. Since then, it has expanded without a clear strategy, but has still been able to raise funds in the market and its share price has continued to rise. Many companies are keen to have Citic Pacific as a shareholder, seeing this as a route to obtaining tenders and funds for development in China.

Jardines perfects knack of looking a greenhorn

Article Abstract:

Conglomerate concern Jardines is closely associated with the development of Hong Kong as a commercial centre, and has many businesses which perform well. However, it has not been successful in entering new markets. Further problems are also being caused by the fact that it is not establishing positive links with China. This has made local concerns unwilling to be seen to be associating too closely with Jardines.
