The secret history that scars my nation

Article Abstract:

The clergy was for many years extremely powerful in Ireland. People had great respect for and fear of the church, and did not dare to question the actions of the clergy. This meant that some members of the clergy were able to abuse children. It is only recently that the actions of the clergy have begun to be questioned. So far, 31 Catholic priests and brothers have been convicted on charges of child sex abuses, with a further 13 cases pending. There are growing calls for a full public inquiry into how the church has handled allegations of sexual abuse against its clergy.
