The sound and the fury of the phonic boom

Article Abstract:

It is now widely recognized in the UK that teaching young children phonics is a key element in helping them learn to read. However, there is fierce debate about the approach to be used for teaching phonics. Some observers believe that the 'synthetic' phonics method, in which children are introduced to the 44 phonemes away from the context of books, is the best approach. Others prefer the 'analytic' phonics system, in which more use is made of children's experience of books and whole words are broken down.

Take away girls, and boys do better

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that both boys and girls can benefit from a certain degree of separate education. Schools where single-sex teaching has been introduced for some subjects have found that both behaviour and academic performance have improved. When taught separately from girls, boys no longer feel the need to show off, and positive competition emerges. Boys also feel able to acknowledge their emotional and spiritual lives when girls are not present.

Honey, I learnt about the kids!

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly widely recognized in the UK that the quality of support given by parents to their children plays a vital role in the children's future. The government is developing a range of policy initiatives designed to strengthen the family unit, and increased emphasis is being placed on parent education. However, many parents do not necessarily welcome the idea of receiving assistance from outside the family.
