The spectre of a human clone

Article Abstract:

The cloning of a sheep by scientists in Edinburgh, Scotland, has attracted considerable attention, especially in the US, where there is strong interest in scientific and medical matters. There is particular controversy regarding the possibility of cloning humans, which raises many legal and ethical concerns. Many countries do not have strict laws against cloning humans, and this has led to fears that the publication in Nature magazine on Feb 27, 1997, of the technique involved in using a cell to produce the cloned sheep could be used to clone people.

Public science faces litmus test

Article Abstract:

The UK government may delay making any further decisions about moving state-owned research laboratories into the private sector because of the impending general election. If the Labour party wins the general election, then this process will not be continued. The Prior Options policy, which has been reviewing improved ways of managing laboratories currently funded by the public sector, has required extensive investment and has attracted widespread opposition.

Article Abstract:

The decision to cease publication of The Industry Standard, which charted the fortunes of the internet, reflects general disappointment with the internet as the US economy deteriorates. The magazine's parent company saw revenues drop from $140 million in 2000 to only $40 million in 2001.
