The whole world is in your hand

Article Abstract:

There was strong emphasis at the 1998 CeBIT computer and communications trade show in Hanover, Germany, on products that can fit in the user's pocket. Ericsson exhibited a very small infrared modem that attaches to the bottom of a mobile phone. This can be pointed at a computer to exchange data. Philips exhibited Synergy, a clip-on device that is linked with a phone to provide the functions of a PC. It has a very good Web browser that allows the user to navigate around pages on the 1-in by 3-in screen. Many of those attending the show discussed the fact that Microsoft has only given token support for its new Windows CE platform.

Too soon to bank on cybercash

Article Abstract:

It is widely recognized that there are disadvantages associated with using coins and banknotes. However, electronic cash systems have not become firmly established yet. A number of pilot electronic cash schemes have been launched, most recently on the Internet. Large pieces of software are required for Internet-based electronic cash systems, and this is deterring many computer users from participating. However, simple closed systems are beginning to operate on the Internet.
