Article Abstract:

Homelessness remains a serious problem in the UK, even if the nature of this problem has changed since the charity Crisis, which works to help the homeless, was founded in 1968. At that time, the single homeless were mainly older men, but in the 1980s single homelessness became much more prevalent among young people. The average life expectancy of a single homeless person is only 42, and the homeless are frequently victims of violent attacks. Crisis Chief Executive Shaks Ghosh believes that homelessness could be completely eliminated if sufficient resources were made available.

Pablo Picasso's feat of clay

Article Abstract:

Pablo Picasso is generally regarded as a sculptor and painter, rather than a potter. However, he actually worked very hard to produce pottery, according to his son, Claude Ruiz Picasso. He created more than 3,500 unique works in clay, and was still having pieces fired at Vallauris, Spain, towards the very end of his life. Limited editions of some of his pottery are often put up for sale, but many of the one-off pieces have never been seen. The Royal Academy in London, England, is to hold the first major exhibition focusing on Picasso's work in clay.

How the WI got in a jam over leadership

Article Abstract:

The recent clashes among the national executive of the Women's Institute (wI), which have led to the appointed of Eileen Meadmore as the new chairman, reflect the organisation's efforts to create a new image. It has traditionally been associated with traditional women's pursuits such as cookery and charity work, but is keen to shed this image. It points out that it is one of the largest campaigning bodies in the UK, becoming involved in many sensitive issues.
