The publication of KGB files brought out of the former Soviet Union by defector Vasili Metrokhin has served to revive interest in international espionage during the Cold War. This event should also serve as a reminder that it is now time to move away from this era, recognizing that spies such as Melita Norwood were acting from personal conviction and were not traitors to their age. Those who joined the Communist Party generally did so because they felt that some action had to be taken to eliminate social inequalities.
