Three sisters; one dilemma

Article Abstract:

Dr Stella Anderson and her sisters Patricia Fraser and Hazel Matheson had surgery to remove healthy breasts, ovaries and wombs because females in their family have a one in two chance of carrying a cancer gene. Five of ten female relatives died from ovarian cancer in their aunts' generation and three women of their own generation had breast cancer. The Aberdeen Royal Hospital NHS Trust set up management programmes for the family. Gynaecological examinations are carried out annually from the age of 28.

The fall of a family man

Article Abstract:

The reputation of scientist Daniel Gajdusek, who won the 1976 Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology, has been severely damaged by claims that he has been involved in child abuse. Some observers claim that he used his position as a cover for travel to exotic locations to procure children who were later abused. Others, including many of the children he brought up as his own, claim that he is simply the victim of the present concern about child abuse.
