Article Abstract:
Jeremy Atiyah tells of a train journey he made in 1988 from China to Germany. He was in the company of a number of Chinese people who were travelling to study in Germany, including Xiaosong, whom he later married. The journey, which took several days, had a rather unreal quality, and a number of key symbols of that time remain in Atiyah's memory. The Chinese passengers seemed to disappear very suddenly, and he was very concerned about their fate.
