Article Abstract:

British, French and American food retailing multiples demand trading payments from suppliers to cover themselves against uncertainties. Supermarkets attract 65% of food shoppers. These payments are disguised as listing allowances and promotional packages. Compensation for cut-price offers and special promotions is expected to be paid by food suppliers. This produces huge profits for the supermarkets but restricts variety for the customer and is unfair to small suppliers of new products.

The girls' bloodless revolution

Article Abstract:

Eating more fish and poultry rather than red meat does not equate with vegetarianism. Teenagers, particularly girls, who object to methods of animal-rearing, will eat convenience foods shunned by wholefood lovers as they do not offend their principles. However, they can have strange ideas of what they will eat, and may subsist on digestive biscuits, baked potatoes, Mars bars and chips. Imaginative meat-free meals take more time to shop for and prepare.

Let's stop the cross-Channel codswallop

The recent controversy about animal welfare issues has led many Britons to level accusations at France, giving examples of cruelty to animals such as veal crates. However, the fact that intensive factory farming is widespread in the UK is conveniently overlooked. France is actually by far the better country for humanely reared, high-quality food, and many butchers sell specially guaranteed meats.
