Time to turn off the subsidies to well-off homeowners

Article Abstract:

The UK government will have to address a number of sensitive issues in relation to future trends in housing demand. It will have to consider how to meet demand for housing from those who cannot afford to purchase their own home, and will have to look at adapting the housing market to changes in the jobs market. It may also need to give attention to those who have inherited property. A report from the Joseph Rowntree foundation recommends taxing capital gains on main homes as the most effective way of ensuring a fair distribution of wealth linked with housing.

Economics, but not as we know it

Article Abstract:

Few ordinary people are aware that there is strong interest among leading economists in detective novels and science fiction. These two genres together embody the essential elements of how economists believe people behave. Firstly, they show that people's actions can apparently be entirely explained by self-interest. Secondly, they assume that people are fully rational. These assumptions determine the world view of economists and in turn dictate important public policies.
