'To show they've saved money they need to spend money, and they do it seriously.' (Clarks Village in Street, UK)

Article Abstract:

The Clarks Village in Street, UK, will attract 2.6-2.75 million shoppers in 1995. It is based around the Clarks shoe factory, but now has many popular high street retailers selling their goods at reduced prices. People are attracted by the prospect of making savings, but will often end up buying many things which they had not really intended to buy, thus spending a great deal of money. All stock is goods which could not be sold through ordinary high street outlets, possibly because it is damaged or an old line.

Lagoons darken village horizon

Article Abstract:

Residents object to Anglian Water plans for two lagoons of 400,000 gallons of sewage sludge near Iken on the Suffolk coast, England. An EC directive prevents sludge being placed in the sea. The Department of the Environment and the Suffolk Preservation Society have not swayed the water authority but EC law against pollution may aid the campaign. The site is more than 400 metres from the closest dwelling so does need planning permission. The smell is likely to affect local people.

Marsalis's village voice

Article Abstract:

Jazz music has international significance, according to trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, who feels that this is reflected in the Marciac Jazz Festival, with which he has been associated since the late 1980s. He has won all major awards, but believes that he still has many challenges. He particularly admires composer Jelly Roll Morton, and one of his eight record releases in 1999 is dedicated to Morton's compositions.
