Trendspotting: Four's shot in the arm for new movies

Article Abstract:

Film on Four, the feature film unit of Channel 4, has been extremely influential in changing the relationship between cinema and television in the UK. The venture, which was created in 1982, has greatly boosted the work of British film-makers, and has been involved with both extremely popular and less well-known films. Film on Four's approach meant that television stopped being merely a consumer of cinema output, as a financial relationship was also established. Film on Four met a quarter of the cost of 'Four Weddings and a Funeral,' for example, and also fully funded 'Trainspotting.'

We don't have to be serious all the time

Article Abstract:

Channel 4 relies on advertising for its income, but does not have the burden of shareholders. It purchases popular US series to boost its revenues, but this money goes towards programmes that would not otherwise be broadcast. It has always been driven by creative energy, and this is reflected in its branding.
