Trident delay linked to copying warhead plant

Article Abstract:

The nuclear warfare manufacturing plant at Aldermaston, UK has been constructed as a virtual identical copy of the American installation in the southern Rocky Mountains and has even been built by a subsidiary of the same construction company. The Aldermaston plant has cost 400 million pounds sterling and was intended to perform more complicatd tasks than the American plant. Because of this there are considerable delays while modifications are made. If the warheads were purchased from the US instead, the money spent on the new plant could have been saved.

World still gripped by conflict as peacemakers struggle

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly widely accepted that a more holistic approach must be taken to avoiding conflict between and within nations. Security policies must now take into account wider environmental, demographic and human factors which can create instability and conflict. In the long term, this could mean channeling resources away from arms control, disarmament and military defence. New approaches to security are reflected in calls for significant changes to be made to Nato's 'Strategic Concept,' which has changed little since the Cold War.

Bosnians shape up for voting challenge

Article Abstract:

Many observers believe that there will be serious problems associated with efforts to allow 3 million Bosnians to vote in five separate elections on the same day in Sep 1996. The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe has stated that the basic preconditions for a fair election do not exist, and that overseeing the elections will be extremely complicated. There are 27,824 candidates from 55 political parties competing for a large number of seats.
