True confessions

Article Abstract:

Many films and television plays have been produced portraying priests and celibacy or the lack of it. Temptation, guilt and doubt are all displayed in films such as 'The Thorn Birds' and 'Stealing Heaven.' Channel 4's soap-opera 'Brookside' includes a story about a priest in love. Research is undertaken for these stories, including the John Hopkins University 1989 survey by a psychiatrist which purported that 20% of American priests break their vows. Another typical screen priest is the detective such as those played by Alec Guinness, including G K Chesterton's 'Father Brown.'
