Jimmy Knapp, 52, who runs the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (previously the NUR,) failed an exam required to become assistant general secretary of the NUR before 1983. He joined the railways as a signalman when he left Kilmarnock Academy at 15. The union was important to him, and he worked for it full-time from the age of 31. He has to stand for re-election in 1994 by law. He was originally a Bevanite and supported Neil Kinnock and the Labour Party policy review.

Fidel Velasquez

Article Abstract:

Mexican trade union leader Fidel Velasquez played a key role in ensuring that the country's ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party was not badly affected by labour unrest. He became extensively involved in trade union politics after the 1910-1917 revolution, and later dominated the Confederation of Mexican Workers. He kept very tight control over the labour movement, and used his own employees to prevent dissidence.

Article Abstract:

Trade unionist Wilf Page was born in Catton, England, in 1913. He left school at 13 and joined the RAF in 1932. He became secretary and agent to MP Edwin Gooch in 1945, and in 1950 joined the Communist Party.
