UK: ASLEF TO HOLD BALLOT ON EUROTUNNEL ACTION

Article Abstract:

Aslef, the UK train drivers' union, has said that it expects to receive overwhelming support for an overtime ban on cross-Channel vehicle shuttle services, when the results of a ballot are received on 11 August 2000. The drivers are involved in a dispute with the operator Eurotunnel, over securing recognition. A ban on overtime could be introduced as early as 18 August, the height of the summer holiday season. Aslef wishes to protest a single union deal between Eurotunnel and the Transport and General Workers' Union, allowing it to represent all of the company's staff. It is campaigning for bargaining rights on behalf of its members. A formal complaint has already been lodged with the TUC.

US: RED LINE FINISHED AT LAST, AFTER 14 YEARS

Article Abstract:

The Los Angeles subway has finally got its new 'Red Line', the track that stretches 17.3miles from Union Station to North Hollywood, and cost US$ 4.7bn to create. Only 100,000 passengers have used the system so far, one third less than was expected when the plans were first designed 14 years ago. It is thought that only tourists and those that live next to the line are going to benefit. The mayor has already stated that he'd wished it had never been started. High-speed bus links, with smart technology is now the next area to focus on.
