UK: SALES OF PROZAC RAISE CONCERN

Article Abstract:

The rising sales of Prozac, the anti-depressant drug have caused concern among critics in the UK, who believe that it reveals a trend towards pharmaceutical-dependency. Prozac is prescribed to 3mn people per year in the UK, and worldwide sales amounted to US$ 2.6bn in 1999. At the same time, Prozac is welcome as an effective treatment for depression and could reduce the 4,000 deaths per year from this illness if prescribed even more widely.
