UK: NEW OFFICIAL TO MONITOR FUEL FOR POOR

Article Abstract:

The distribution and price of fuel for low-income households in the UK is to be monitored by a new official appointed by the government. The most likely candidate for the position in David Varney, the former chief executive of BG who left after the group demerged in November 2000. The new policy will target households where fuel bills account for over 10% of total income, which is thought to account for 4.5mn households. These people will be encouraged to change to cheaper fuel offers where possible. However, the role will also examine the causes of fuel poverty.
