UK: BUDGENS STRONG IN CONVENIENCE STORE MARKET

Article Abstract:

Budgens manages to exist in the consolidating grocery sector with just 200 stores by being there for shoppers to top-up with items. It has staked its claim to the GB[pound] 15bn convenience store market. Its strategy of locating stores in areas shunned by the larger multiples has enhanced its portfolio. The company is also still on the acquisition trail after acquiring 7-11 stores and renaming them b2. Interim results shows that pre-tax profits were up 36% to GB[pound] 8.5mn and like-for-like sales rose 4%. Margins are also improving as the group considers extending its home shopping service. However, in a market of economies of scale Budgens remains a possible takeover target.
