UK: WH SMITH STRIKES DEAL WITH CARLTON

Article Abstract:

UK-based retailer, WH Smith, has struck an agreement with UK-based media business, Carlton Communications, which will entail the use of online services to endorse each partner's web sites. WH Smith's 700 retail outlets will be used to promote the online operation of Carlton, while the former will also oversee the latter's fulfilment and electronic commerce activities. Groups with Internet operations are striking such agreements at present as part of moves to boost their online status in a market where competition is increasing. The partnership would allow WH Smith and Carlton to enhance the coverage of their services and glean access to certain abilities that they lack at present. WH Smith's web sites will also feature online content courtesy of Carlton.
