UK: CONNEX TRAINS HIT BY OVERTIME REFUSAL

Article Abstract:

Connex South Central train services in Sussex and south London have been disrupted by a refusal of drivers to work overtime. The action caused around 380 trains to be cancelled on a planned basis. Rail union Aslef said the dispute was not industrial or strike action and that it had not called on members to act. The dispute follows court action taken by Connex against Aslef that infuriated the union's members causing them to withdraw overtime for which they are under no contractual obligations. The problem is that Connex cannot run services with the current number of drivers. The dispute could be resolved by a reduction in the working week from 37 to 35 hours and negotiations for 100% of the salary to count towards pensions.

UK: ONE-DAY TRAIN STRIKES AVERTED

Article Abstract:

A deal reached between management and unions regarding a shorter working week for train drivers has led to train drivers' union Aslef calling off its one-day strike planned for 02 February 2000. Four additional one-day strikes planned by union members at Connex have also been averted. Aslef has also given up its ban on voluntary overtime. Drivers hours will be reduced to 36 hours a week by October 2000 and will be cut to 35 hours a year later. Aslef estimates an additional 80 drivers will be need to makeup the shortfall of hours. Connex has stipulated that the deal must be a made to pay for itself, although it has agreed that drivers pay would be pensionable by the year 2003. Both Aslef and Connex have agreed new methods of dealing with disputes.
