UK: MOBILE PHONE OFFER FROM ABBEY NATIONAL

Article Abstract:

Abbey National bank is to offer cheap mobile phones to 150,000 customers of its new stand-alone e-bank, cahoot. Halifax recently announced plans to give away WAP phones when IF, its rival Internet bank goes live in July 2000. Lloyds TSB and Barclays have also entered into the e-banking war, making a string of e-commerce statements over the last few days. The Abbey phones will incorporate General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), which the bank believes is superior to WAP, and be sold to customers rather than 'given away', according to IT director Mac Millington.

UK: EGG FORMULATES PLANS TO RETAIN CUSTOMERS

Article Abstract:

Prudential-owned Internet bank Egg is considering a number of schemes to retain the loyalty of its one million customers. The company hopes that the creation of an 'electronic wallet' will ensure the use of the Egg credit card for online purchases by Egg customers. Discussions are being held with a number of US software providers over the initiative, which would involve central storage of customer details. Egg is also believed to be planning an interactive digital service on BSkyB's Open home shopping channel, and it may launch an offer such as Halifax's offer of free mobile phones, in conjunction with British Telecom. The bank is to be floated in June 2000, at an expected value of GB[pound] 1.5bn-2bn.
