UK: GOVERNMENT SPENDING PLANS CRITICISED

Article Abstract:

The UK government's GBu 68bn public spending boost came under fire on 7 November 2000 from shadow Chancellor, Michael Portillo, who envisaged growth in tax levels and interest rates during the forthcoming parliament as a result. Mr Portillo cited Treasury plans indicating that public sector spending would exceed economic growth. He fears that the private sector would lose out as public spending gathered pace and also urged Chancellor Gordon Brown to draw up a series of tax cuts to improve the competitiveness of the UK economy and assist the presently over-taxed electorate.
