UK: GPS EMBRACE COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE

Article Abstract:

Around 20% of GPs in the UK now offer complementary medicine in one form or another, representing a major change in attitudes over the past 12 months. The Department of Health has formally supported the move, advising GPs on how to obtain services from complimentary therapists, and experts say that the barriers between complementary and conventional medicines are being broken down. Pressure from patients is part of the reason for the shift in attitudes, with GPs also looking for inexpensive and straightforward ways to help patients that does not entail medical intervention owing to pressure on surgeries and increasing workloads.

Article Abstract:

The herbal remedy for depression, St John's Wort, is the focus of a UK Medicines Control Agency (MCA) probe amid fears over its safety, especially in conjunction with normal medicines. Sales of the remedy have risen in recent years and an estimated 2mn people in the UK are understood to have used St John's Wort. However, the effectiveness of seven drugs including HRT and the contraceptive pill is said to have been reduced when used with the herbal treatment. Reactions included irregular bleeding and in the case of cyclosporin, which is used by transplant patients, the rejection of transplanted organs.
