UK: INCREASE IN PASSENGERS FOR BRITISH AIRWAYS

Article Abstract:

British Airways has recorded the biggest increase in passenger load factors for the previous five years. During April 2000 the airline increase the proportion of seats filled on each aircraft by 3.7% to 72.6%. There was a 7.5% increase in business and first class passengers during April, which is said to have been the tenth consecutive month with an increase in premium traffic levels. British Airways is due to announce its annual results on 23 May 2000, and despite the improvement in its passenger load factor the airline is expected to announce a full year loss of around GB[pound] 250mn.

UK: LOW COST AIRLINES TO BE HIT BY FUEL COSTS

Article Abstract:

A report to be published 25 September 2000 by Travel & Tourism Intelligence, suggests that rising fuel costs will hamper the future growth of the low cost passenger airline market. The rising cost of a barrel of oil is expected to lead many airlines to pass on the costs to customers and increase fares. British Airways has already unveiled plans to raise fares by 3%, while easyJet has increased ticket prices by around GB[pound] 0.50.

IRELAND: GROWTH EXPECTED BY RYANAIR

Article Abstract:

Ryanair, the low-cost Irish airline, has announced that it expects a 30% increase in traffic growth for the second quarter of 2000 compared to the corresponding period the previous year. The company attributed growth to the success of its Ryanair.com booking service and the addition of 10 routes. Ryanair also revealed plans to acquire three Boeing 737-800 next generation aircraft. The planes are scheduled for delivery in 2002.
