UK: INCREASE IN RURAL BUILDING PLANNED

Article Abstract:

The UK government is expected to unveil plans within the next 10 days outlining plans to raise house building in rural areas of the UK. The government aims to see a minimum of 2,500 affordable homes built in rural areas on an annual basis. The plans will set recommendations allowing local authorities to allow the building of an executive home if a subsidised home is also built. An extra GB[pound] 872mn is to be spent on building new social housing in rural and urban areas of the UK, on top of an extra GB[pound] 50mn to be spent in 2000.

UK: DECLINE IN COUNCIL HOUSES PROJECTED

Article Abstract:

The number of council homes in England will decline to 500,000 over the coming ten years, compared with 3.2mn at present, according to the Chartered Institute of Housing and Council of Mortgage Lenders. It is projected that Wales and Scotland will have no council homes in ten years. The leading housing organisations say that affordable social housing would be overseen by housing trusts and associations as opposed to elected councils.

UK: WENSLEYDALE PURCHASE TO MEET DEMAND

Article Abstract:

The Wensleydale creamery in Hawes, UK, has acquired Fountain's Dairy, its main rival in a bid to increase its size and meet rising demand. Since 1997, sales of Wensleydale cheese has increased by 15% while other cheeses such as Cheddar, Cheshire and Lancashire have all fallen. Wensleydale sales have benefited from the association with the Wallace & Gromit series of cartoons.
