UK: INTERX HEADING FOR INTERNET SOFTWARE STATUS

Article Abstract:

Interx is heading for a new look, thanks to new chief executive, Philip Crawford. Mr Crawford, who once led the US computer giant, Oracle Corporation, is to take InterX into the realm of Internet software. The company is to sell its distribution business for approximately GB[pound] 40mn and invest the funds in its technology division. The previous chief executive, James Wickes, is to move into marketing and push InterX into Europe and the US. Third quarter results for the year 2000 were as follows: Table: InterX Figures in GB[pound] mn Current Distribution delivery profits 4.7 Technology arm losses .257 On sales of: .235 Shares rose GB[pound] 1.87 to GB[pound] 14.50.

Squaring up to the US giants

The UK Web design sector is facing significant challenges, particularly as a result of acquisitions by foreign concerns. The number of larger independent Web designers is falling, either through foreign acquisition or through establishing closer links with UK advertising agencies. However, some observers believe that independent Web designers do have a viable future, particularly as there may be limits to the benefits US companies can derive from acquired UK Web designers.

Community and communication form a significant element of Internet usage. Many people use the Internet to establish contact with others and to exchange views, rather than merely to buy goods or obtain information. A number of search engine providers have established a communities concept, in which subscribers can create a virtual meeting place. Free community services of this kind are regarded as a valuable tool in attracting users to specific web sites.
