UK: M&S TESTS CANAL TRANSPORT

Article Abstract:

Marks & Spencer (M&S) is due to use canal transport to take several tons of waste cardboard boxes and packaging from its London-based stores to a recycling plant in Birmingham, capitalising on the latest trend in waste disposal. The high street retailer, which recycles 80% of the 25,000 tons of waste cardboard it produces a year, is due to meet with Birmingham's Kappa Paper Recycling and the Canal Boat Operator's Association to discuss operating a regular service. Using the waterways to transport non-sensitive materials such as domestic refuse and recyclables is seen as a sustainable alternative to using lorries.
